Sedation dentistry is often considered something that’s designed just for extensive procedures and patients with dental anxiety. But sedation dentistry can help many other kinds of patients as well. Dr. Bryan Bumpas of Prairie Dental Group, a dentist in Edmond, OK, describes sedation dentistry and who it can benefit.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry utilizes medication to keep the patient calm and relaxed throughout their dental procedure. There are many methods of sedation that can be used. At our office, we offer sedation with nitrous oxide, often known as laughing gas. This form of sedation is designed to keep you relaxed and even giddy throughout the procedure.
While you are relaxed with nitrous oxide, you shouldn’t completely fall asleep. You’ll be alert enough to answer any questions the dentist may have for you. It’s administered throughout the procedure by being breathed in through the nose. It takes effect and diminishes quickly, so you’re able to drive yourself to and from your appointment.
Who Benefits From Sedation Dentistry?
Traditionally, sedation dentistry is seen as something to help patients that suffer from dental fear and anxiety. Dental fear can occur on a spectrum. For some patients, it may only be certain sounds or tools that bring it on. For others, they may not even be able to come to the office for their regular checkups.
Sedation dentistry allows patients with dental fear to both visit regularly and relax while more extensive procedures are done. If the patient hasn’t visited for regular dental care in a long time, it’s more likely that they’ll need further restorative dentistry work done. Sedation dentistry is necessary to make sure that they’ll be able to get necessary procedures done.
But patients with dental fear aren’t the only ones that can benefit. Sedation dentistry can also help patients that are children or have movement disorders. For certain procedures, sitting still is necessary. Random sudden movements can cause injury to the patient and make the dentist’s job more difficult. Sedation allows these movements to relax.
It can also help patients with severe gag reflexes. A gag reflex basically fights against the dentist as they’re trying to work on your teeth. It can make it very uncomfortable for both patient and dentist. Sedation can relax the gag reflex and allow the procedure to be performed quickly and efficiently.
