Why are Baby Teeth Important?

Your child’s baby teeth or primary teeth are very important and play key roles in their development. Properly positioned and healthy primary teeth will help your child develop normal speech patterns. In addition, the primary teeth play a role in the position and growth of permanent teeth. If a baby tooth is decayed or damaged, we will provide appropriate dental care to maintain healthy oral development.

Sealants

Sealants are a great way to protect against tooth decay and cavities on your back teeth, or molars. These are the teeth that are most vulnerable to cavities and decay because they are used in the chewing process. Molars are also the most difficult to reach and clean, so it is important to schedule routine dental cleanings. Molars first come in at around 5-7 years of age, with a second set coming in between the ages of 11-14. It is best to have a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure they are protected early. Sealants create a barrier between your tooth and any plaque, food particles, and bacteria. They can last for about 10 years and can be reapplied if necessary.

Dental Risks Common in Older Patients

Many prescription drugs commonly have a side effect of dry mouth. Normal salivary flow counteracts the acids created by bacterial plaque, reducing the risk of dental decay. However, if older patients have dry mouth, they are at a higher risk for tooth decay, especially on the roots of teeth. Seniors are also at a greater risk of periodontal progression, or bone loss and gum recession. Gum recession exposes more tooth roots. Seniors are also at an increased risk of periodontal disease, or gum disease. This dental problem occurs when there is an excess of bacterial plaque on the gums. Severe cases of gum disease can degrade bone and put teeth at risk for loss.

Geriatric Care

Our dentists provide personalized treatment for patients of every age. Restorative and cosmetic solutions are custom-fit for comfort, and each patient’s health is taken into account before treatment.
